1 shot in head during Jefferson County road rage incident

One person was shot in the head Tuesday night on a highway in Jefferson County in a road-rage crash, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. Tuesday on southbound U.S. 285 near Settlers Drive, about 9 miles southwest of Morrison, according to the .

Sheriff’s deputies were already responding to the crash when the shooting was reported, according to the agency.

Witnesses reported a road-rage incident on the highway involving a black SUV and a light-colored Subaru traveling in the same direction, according to a from the agency.

It’s unclear what the road-rage incident entailed, but sheriff’s officials said it ended with a crash and a passenger in the black SUV getting shot in the head.

As of Wednesday morning, the unidentified victim remained in “critical but stable condition” at the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. The office did not offer any identifying details about the victim, including their age or gender.

That section of highway was closed for hours Tuesday night amid the investigation, but reopened shortly before midnight, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s officials did not say whether a suspect was arrested or any other injuries were reported.

Additional information on the shooting and the road rage incident leading up to it was not immediately available Wednesday.
