Douglas County Judge Ryan Stuart has sentenced Hanna Gilmour to 36 years in prison for the death of her 22-month-old son, according to a news release from the .

A jury previously found Gilmour, 29, guilty of felony child abuse resulting in death and misdemeanor child abuse after the death of her son, Layton.

“Thirty-six years will never bring back a beautiful, innocent child, but that number shows Layton’s short life mattered. And this sentence reflects that,” Danielle Jaramillo, chief deputy district attorney, said in a statement.

The child’s father, Jacob Birkbeck, arrived at Gilmour’s apartment in Littleton for a custody exchange in November 2022 and found his son “didn’t look right.” Gilmour allegedly laughed and said the boy was sleeping, according to the news release.

Birkbeck later noticed Layton wasn’t breathing and called 911. The child died, and when investigators searched Gilmour’s home, they found cocaine, mushrooms, marijuana and fentanyl, according to the news release.

Prosecutors alleged Layton crawled on the floor and accidentally ingested fentanyl, which led to his death.
