Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park is now closed to through traffic for the winter season, officials announced Friday.

The stretch of U.S. 34 connects Estes Park to Grand Lake over the Continental Divide, with 11 miles of pavement winding above 11,500 feet. The road frequently sees drifting snow, high winds and below-freezing temperatures through the winter, park officials said.

Trail Ridge Road usually closes to through traffic in mid-October and reopens in late May, as long as the weather cooperates.

Visitors can enjoy a scenic winter drive in the national park before reaching the road closures at Many Parks Curve on the east side and the Colorado River Trailhead on the west side.
