A Denver woman got three years of probation after police said she in a May incident in Boulder, before when she was arrested.

Alyiah Vega, 53, was sentenced to three years of probation and one year of work release after pleading guilty to one count of felony menacing with a real or simulated weapon and one count of criminal impersonation, a class two misdemeanor, as part of a plea agreement. The agreement covered both the menacing schoolchildren case and her impersonation of her daughter.

Two counts of felony-level criminal impersonation causing liability, 18 counts of felony menacing with a real or simulated weapon and 17 counts of negligent child abuse causing no injury were dismissed as part of the plea deal, according to online court records.

Boulder County District Court Judge Thomas F. Mulvahill cited Vega’s relatively slim criminal history and the fact that she has a plan to re-enter society with a job while handing down the sentence. Mulvahill could have sentenced Vega to 120 days in jail, according to sentencing guidelines.

In May, Vega reportedly followed teachers and a group of children in the 1700 block of Broadway around 11 a.m. on a Monday, according to a news release and an email from Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty.

Vega got within about 10 feet of the group and threatened to kill them, waving a knife around, according to witnesses, authorities said in a press release. The teachers and students walked away uninjured.

When she was arrested shortly after the incident near 17th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, Vega claimed to be her daughter, a 31-year-old woman from Arizona.

Days after posting bond, Vega was arrested again and was identified as herself, not her daughter, according to a police social media post.

Vega was previously sentenced to 146 days in jail for driving while ability impaired in March 2023, according to court records.
