Updates
9:49 p.m.: The format for Championship Saturday has changed this year. Whereas normally the championship round starts at the lowest weight classes and works its way up to the heavyweights, this year, finals matches are starting at a randomly drawn weight class. So Saturday’s title round (which begins with the Parade of Champions at 4 p.m., earlier than 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. starts of years past) will start with the 170-pound girls and the 190-pound boys. — Kyle Newman
8:17 p.m.: That’s just about a wrap from inside Ball Arena at the end of Day 2. Here’s a look at the team leaders going into Championship Saturday …

8:08 p.m.: The Panthers of Pomona are making mincemeat of the 5A boys bracket en route to an eighth straight team title after advancing 11 of 14 qualified wrestlers into the semifinals. Out of those 11, nine Panthers are on to Saturday’s final in their weight class. Here are the 5A boys finals matchups: 106 pounds: Lincoln Valdez (Pomona) vs. Onofre Gonzales (Ponderosa); 113: Jax Quintana (Adams City) vs. Tony Tufano (Brighton); 120: Logan Dellow (Pomona) vs. Kel Unrein (Fruita Monument); 126: JR Ortega (Grandview) vs. Jacob Ness (Castle View); 132: Cooper Mathews (Cherokee Trail) vs. Kyle Menuez (Grandview); 138: Angel Serrano (Pomona) vs. Jaylen Burge (Ponderosa); 144: Michael Lopez (Ponderosa) vs. Ethyn BravoPacker (Brighton); 150: Derek Barrows (Pomona) vs. Jack Simpson (Ponderosa); 157: Donovan Symalla (Pomona) vs. Gavin Weichelt (Pine Creek); 165: Emmitt Munson (Pomona) vs. Gunner Lopez (Grandview); 175: Kalob Ybarra (Pomona) vs. Brogan Trollope (Pine Creek); 190: Emmerson Claeys (Pomona) vs. Bryce Hayman (Loveland); 215: Eli Stevens (Northglenn) vs. Maddux Najera (Pomona); 285: Alexander Rose (Legend) vs. Leland Day (Grandview) — Nate Peterson
7:58 p.m.: Another matchup between undefeated wrestlers is on the docket for Sunday, as the boys’ Class 2A 215-pound bracket should ignite some fireworks. Burlington’s Anthony Estrada (35-0) pinned Swink’s Keegan Martin in 1:25 to advance to the final — only to be outdone by Buena Vista’s Carter Stromer (39-0) by literally one second, as Stromer pinned Springfield’s Jett Konkel in 1:24. It should prove an epic heavyweight bout.
7:41 p.m.: The most anticipated match of the tournament is set in stone. Pomona senior Timberly Martinez is going for her fourth title on Saturday night after pinning her way through the first three rounds of the tournament in the Class 5A 155-pound bracket, including a fall over Arapahoe’s Daisy Padilla in the semifinals. Standing in Martinez’s way of the ultimate CHSAA wrestling glory is undefeated Brighton junior Matilda Hruby, who has beaten Martinez twice this season. Hruby pinned all three opponents so far in less than a minute, including dispatching Discovery Canyon’s Sophia Flores in 48 seconds in the semifinals. Grab your popcorn, this title matchup is going to be epic. — Kyle Newman
7:09 p.m.: Pomona will run away with the Class 5A title on Saturday, but the Pomona/Ponderosa is still very much alive and well. Panthers sophomore Lincoln Valdez will face Mustangs sophomore Onofre Gonzales in the 106-pound final, and in 138 final, Panthers senior Angel Serrano will face Mustangs senior Jaylen Burge. A third Arvada vs. Parker matchup was booked in the last couple minutes, with Pomona senior Derek Barrows advancing to face Ponderosa junior Jack Simpson in the 150 final. — Kyle Newman
6:29 p.m.: It’ll officially be a battle of two undefeated wrestlers in the girls’ 5A 100-pound bracket, as Pomona’s Justice Gutierrez pinned Riverdale Ridge’s Shayla Wolters and Sand Creek’s Peggy Dean took down Lewis-Palmer’s Lilly Lundy 15-0 by technical fall to advance to the finals. The 39-0 Gutierrez, has won two straight state titles, but will face a tough challenger in Dean, just a freshman.
“I don’t want to put anyone on a pedestal,” Dean said, admitting she was well aware Gutierrez is undefeated. “I just wrestle how I always do, and don’t let the nervousness get to me. If anything — make me want it more.”
6:01 p.m.: The semifinals have begun at Ball Arena. Team leaders heading into the round: North Fork in Class 2A, Eaton in Class 3A, Pueblo East in Class 4A, Pomona by a wide margin in Class 5A, Grand Junction Central in Class 5A girls and Pueblo Central in Class 4A girls. Pomona (127.5 points) is on track to break the state meet points record and all 14 of the Panthers wrestlers will be scoring. — Kyle Newman
3:50 p.m.: Pueblo East is currently locked in a dogfight with Air Academy in the boys’ 4A standings, as the Eagles look to go back-to-back at state after winning 4A in 2024. Pueblo has maintained just a narrow few-point lead on Air Academy for most of Thursday, but head coach Tyler Lundquist was hardly concerned about the nipping Kadets. Lundquist had worked it “all on paper” a couple days ago, he told The Denver Post, and said he knew the 4A rankings would be close until the semifinals Thursday night — at which point he anticipates Pueblo East to win 4A by a “30 to 40-point margin.”
“They call me Rain Man,” Lundquist said, “because I’m always doing the math.”
2:57 p.m.: Heading into tonight’s semifinals, here are a few of the tournament’s stars so far: Chatfield’s Ryen Hickey leads all wrestlers with the fewest time on the mat, as her two pins in the Class 5A girls 145-pound bracket have come in a total time of 33 seconds. One of those pins came in a mere eight seconds. Mullen’s Isaak Chavez leads the boys in that statistic, with two pins in the Class 3A 175-pound bracket in 56 seconds. As a team, Pomona has a tournament-best 16 pins so far in 30:35 of mat time. And Eaton senior Blake Hawkins, at Class 3A 120 pounds, has racked up the most points of any boy with 21.5. — Kyle Newman
12:17 p.m.: With the lower-classification first- and second-round consolation matches concluded from this morning, and the upper-classification consolation matches this afternoon, it’s important to remember the gravity of these matches in the team title chases. Getting points in the “blood rounds” by finishing third through sixth is critical to a team’s chances at winning a title, unless you’re running away with the crown like the Pomona boys are. These wrestlers in the consolation side of the bracket aren’t competing for an individual state title anymore, but a few more wins can help their teams in a major way come Saturday. — Kyle Newman
9 a.m: Here are the team standings after Day 1 of the larger classifications: In Class 5A, powerhouse Pomona (seeking its eighth straight title) already has a commanding lead, as the Panthers advanced 11 of their 14 wrestlers to the semifinals. In Class 4A, Air Academy (62 points) and Pueblo East (61) sit atop the leaderboard, with Roosevelt (49.5) lurking. In Class 5A girls, Grand Junction Central (60.5) is first, Pomona (52) is second and Chatfield (41) is third, with the Warriors in control of their own destiny with seven wrestlers in the semifinals. Heading into Friday’s semifinals in the lower classes, Cedaredge (55 points) leads Class 2A, with North Fork (50), Burlington (45.5) and Rocky Ford (44.5) close behind. In Class 3A, Eaton’s built up a huge lead with 83.5 points, with the closest behind the Reds being Fort Lupton at 42.5. In girls Class 4A, Pueblo Central (57.5) is in first with Las Animas (45.5) in second. — Kyle Newman
9 a.m.: With 1,344 wrestlers competing at Ball Arena across six different classifications (four for boys and two for girls), 16 individuals who have wrestled at least 20 matches are going for a perfect season. Those girls wrestlers are: Pomona’s Justice Gutierrez (5A, 100 pounds), Sand Creek’s Peggy Dean (5A, 100), Prairie View’s Jaydin Cuevas (5A, 115), Vista PEAK’s Amelia Bacon (5A, 125), Chatfield’s Ryen Hickey (5A, 145), Brighton’s Matilda Hruby, Grand Junction Central’s Shylee Tuzon (5A 170), Broomfield’s Shayla Martinez (5A 190), Canon City’s Kate Doughty (4A 135) and Strasburg’s Vivienne Gitke (4A 140).
