A wildfire that sparked last week in southern Colorado has consumed more than 4,500 acres and evacuated dozens of residents, officials said Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, the 24 fire was burning on 4,600 acres near Fort Carson with no containment, more than quadrupling its size from Saturday afternoon, according to the . The wildfire was reported just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and grew rapidly between Thursday and Saturday amid high winds.

No injuries or damaged structures had been reported as of Sunday morning, but Colorado 115 remained closed between Fort Carson and Penrose for “fire activity,” according to the .

“This closure is critical to ensure the safety of firefighters and allow crews to operate effectively,” Fremont County sheriff’s officials said in a .

Dozens of homes along the highway corridor north of Penrose remained under mandatory evacuation orders on Sunday, including a 2-mile area around Fremont County Road F45 and Colorado 115, emergency officials said. A pre-evacuation order was also issued for El Paso County homes along Colorado 115 in the Sandy Creek Ranch Heights area on Saturday, .
