Whether you’re kicking it indoors or outdoors, public recreation centers offer year-round adult sports that combine vigorous exercise, social hangs, and a friendly way to scratch that competitive itch.
City rec centers can connect free agents looking to jump on a team, or who want to take lessons before deciding which sport(s) to focus on. The competitive leagues balance camaraderie and fitness, but jettison the angry rivalries and elaborate drama, coaches say.
“It’s nice to play hard and win the game, but everyone wants to go home at the end of the night,” said Burt Reich, coordinator of adult sports leagues at Foothills Park & Recreation District in Littleton. “We work hard to protect our players’ safety and keep it fun.”
Reich has coached and played competitive adult sports for more than three decades, and currently coaches fast-pitch softball, volleyball and basketball at Foothills. Since joining the district 11 years ago, he has added new leagues for basketball and volleyball as demand for low-stakes, high-reward athletic pursuits has grown.
But they’re not all created equal, he said.
“When you’re considering an adult sports program, you should look at the number of teams and their playoffs structure — do all the teams have a chance to compete? — as well as how they maintain their fields and the quality of their coaches and umpires,” he said. “Will they connect you with teams looking for free agents? That’s crucial if you’re not already part of one.”
Whether you’re playing volleyball against your son and his friends, as 66-year-old Reich does with his own buddies, or getting matched to a team as an individual, there’s likely something for every sports lover at your city rec center.
