Wildfire burning east of I-25 in southern Colorado fully contained

A wildfire that sparked Wednesday in rural southern Colorado, charring more than 600 acres on the plains east of Interstate 25, was fully contained overnight, officials said.

The Turkey fire was first reported at 2:22 p.m. near Huerfano County Road 122 and Ridge Road, the said Wednesday evening.

The wildfire was burning on 638 acres about 10 miles northeast of Walsenburg and 4 miles south of the Pueblo County line, according to . As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was 100% contained, .

Fire crews from Gardner, Rye and Spanish Peaks fire departments and a hotshot crew all responded to the fire, officials said. Firefighters stayed on scene overnight to monitor the burn area for any flare-ups.
