A wildfire burning south of Colorado Springs caused mandatory evacuations on Wednesday night as it charred 4,000 acres, fire officials said.

The Hammer fire was first reported about 10 miles southeast of Fountain just after 5 p.m., according to the national wildfire dispatch program WildCAD.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order near Hanover, including Hammer Road east to South Peyton Highway and Myers Road north to Squirrel Creek. People in the evacuation zone should leave immediately, sheriff’s officials said.

This is a developing story.
