Civic Center Eats
Opens Wednesday. Downtown Denver has no shortage of tasty lunch options, but Civic Center Eats is easily the breeziest. A dozen or so food trucks gather Wednesdays and Thursdays at Bannock Street and the Civic Center Park Meadow to sling burgers, falafel, lemonade, barbecue, ice cream and more from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with this year’s installment kicking off Wednesday, May 13.
The current outdoor season, which extends through June 15 (before returning on July 8, and extending through October), will feature more than 50 trucks, starting out with Bandwagon Sandwich Co., Berliner Haus, D’ Maracuchos Cafe, The Balkan European, Karün Cafe, Main Squeeze Lemonade and Treats, Taste Bud Bullies, Mile High Tikka Express, Opa Greek eats, Saucy Chops, Smokin’ Wheels BBQ, El Cubanaso, Afrocuisine, Taco Bron, Tum Yumz, Rolling Stoves, AFC Wings. Join the Space Race
Sunday. Colorado’s official aerospace museum, Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, seems like the perfect place to launch a new, space-themed 5K. And indeed, on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 10), it will do just that, with The Space Race 5K. The all-ages event is suitable for runners, walkers, families, and space enthusiasts, the museum said, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wings’ home base in Lowry.
The race takes flight with a festive “launch pad” start and rocket-style countdown, and costumes are encouraged (ideas include astronauts, aliens and fictional space explorers). The post-race “touch down” delivers runners to a “moon base,” or a space-themed party with activities, photo opps, and a vendor village. Anyone who presents a race bib will receive 25% off museum admission.
It takes place at 7711 E. Academy Blvd. in Denver. Registration costs $55.49, with youths 16 and under and seniors $35. Visit to sign up, and for more details.

A rock ‘n’ roll return
Opens Friday. About a year ago, prolific Denver-based music photographer Michael McGrath held a Death Party to give the middle finger to his stage 4 cancer diagnosis. A year later, he’s still shooting shows and, along with writer/educator Amy McGrath (his wife), has sorted through thousands of rolls of film and digital folders he’s created over the last three decades to compile a comprehensive new exhibit, “The End Is the Beginning.”
McGrath’s work covers artists ranging from indie provocateur Peaches and Denver’s Nathaniel Rateliff to Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Soundgarden and Steve Martin, so don’t be surprised to see some of your favorites in there. It opens on Friday, May 8, at the Lane Meyer Projects gallery inside Pon Pon Bar, 2528 Walnut St. in Denver, and continues through June 28. It’s free to visit. McGrath will be in attendance opening night. See and for more.

RiNo’s first Street Fair
Saturday. Denver’s hip River North Art District is scaling up with the first-ever RiNo Street Fair, which arrives on Saturday, May 9. The event will feature more than 100 local artisans, food trucks, a bar program, live music, craft beer, pickleball and more, organizers said, and attendance is free. The bar program will also offer craft pours from Ratio Beerworks, Our Mutual Friend, Bierstadt Lagerhaus, and Odell Brewing, with proceeds going to the nonprofit RiNo Art District.
The all-ages event runs 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday along Larimer Street between 28th and 31st streets. Get more details, including a full list of vendors and an overall schedule, at .
