Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii has kicked a location.
The chain recently closed its Highland outpost at the corner of Speer and Federal, where it sold drinks and King’s Hawaiian-stuffed sandwiches since 2021.
The 2990 Speer Blvd. spot was the first Colorado location for Bad Ass, which began slinging its coffee grown in volcanic soil in 1989. The company shifted to a franchise model in 1995 when it was purchased by a Utah couple. A local ownership group bought the company in 2019 and moved its headquarters to Centennial.
Bad Ass officials did not respond to requests for comment from BusinessDen.
The company had 45 franchised stores across the country as of January. The closure on Speer leaves Bad Ass with six locations in Colorado, including near Union Station in Denver and in Lakewood and Boulder.
A leasing brochure for the 1,500-square-foot space at Speer and Federal, also previously home to Starbucks, says the space is available for sublease and sees 50,000 vehicles pass it each day. The property is being marketed by Kinsey & Co. Commercial Real Estate, which did not respond to requests for an interview.
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii got its name from the donkeys that carried coffee beans down the mountains of Kona, Hawaii. Kona natives referred to the donkeys as the “bad ass ones.”
