
An osprey pair could see at least one of their eggs hatch this week. A livestream might catch the baby bird’s first moments at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.
One of the two fairgrounds ospreys was seen on a livestream warming its four eggs midday Tuesday, as the incubation period for its first egg comes to an end. The pair laid the first egg of its clutch on April 9, according to .
The incubation period for osprey eggs is between 36 and 42 days, according to , a Cornell University resource for bird information. The 42 days will come to a close on Thursday, making this week the ideal week to watch for a hatchling.
The avian pair laid four eggs. Osprey are expected to lay from one to four in one clutch, according to All About Birds.
The other fairgrounds eggs were laid on April 12, April 15 and April 18, according to Parks & Open Space. The April 12 egg is also ripe for hatching.
One of the ospreys was seen Tuesday morning — with its trademark white and black-speckled head and brown feathers — warming its four eggs. The other bird was seen bringing a new stick to the nest.
Last year, at least . Osprey chicks only have a coin-toss chance of surviving their first year, though, according to Parks & Open Space.
The osprey pair’s nest is just east of Cattail Pond at the fairgrounds, and has been there since 2009, when wildlife biologists moved it from a nearby light pole where the birds first made their nest.
