An Arizona man rolled his SUV down a Colorado mountainside on Thursday after hitting an icy patch on Imogene Pass, San Miguel County sheriff’s officials said.

The 58-year-old Phoenix man crashed at about 9:30 a.m. a few switchbacks below the 13,114-foot summit, the sheriff’s office said on social media.

He was able to get out of his Toyota, which was flipped upside down and walk up to the unpaved road. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The man started driving up the pass in Ouray County but did not know the pass wasn’t open on the San Miguel County side because no one posted any signs on the road, sheriff’s officials said.

Ouray County road crews later posted signs near the summit that the San Miguel side of the pass is closed.

is an unpaved, rocky former mining road that gains nearly 5,000 feet of elevation as it connects Ouray and Telluride and is only accessible by off-road vehicles.
