Re: “Buc-ee’s takes step on mega travel center,” business story
I’m normally pro-business. After all, we all like to have a job. But Buc-ee’s is trying to pull a fast one. Instead of locating off Baptist Road in El Paso County, they want to plop a store that will feel as brightly lit as Las Vegas and seem like it is the size of Costco onto a tree-covered lot, adjacent to open space that is normally quite dark and quiet at night.
How? By calling themselves a ‘convenience store’. This noise and light pollution do not fit the area. A suggestion for El Paso County, if Buc-ee’s wants to be considered a ‘convenience store’, then limit both the store and parking footprint to no larger than other stores on County Line Road in the area.

We must reform Medicaid
Re: “Trump’s Medicaid cuts keep getting more harmful for all Americans,” June 14 commentary
Massive Medicaid fraud uncovered in many states is not mentioned. This theft is diverting funds away from Americans who depend on them and threatens the viability of the program because of the lack of oversight by states.
The Medicaid expansion introduced waste and abuse into the program by covering able-bodied persons without dependents. Yes, the 2025 Working Families Tax Cut Act included a provision for work requirements for able-bodied adults. Why should they be on Medicaid if they are not working or attempting to work, and so diverting funds from those truly needing them?
Why should it be difficult for medically frail people or those with a medical condition to prove such? Doctors provide “Disabled” placards for disabled drivers and written notes verifying illness all the time. Working people can schedule time away for medical appointments or surgeries. Why is there a perceived problem for Medicaid recipients that work?
The regulation to prevent states from boosting payments to providers is a tax act provision to prevent states from artificially raising provider costs (for example, by taxing them) and then submitting the higher provider costs to the federal government to receive higher federal matching payments – a practice abusive to federal taxpayers.
If the tax act changes were not implemented, and the new federal fraud task force were not going after Medicaid fraud, then the most vulnerable Americans would continue to see funds they should receive diverted by fraud and waste, and the viability of the program would remain questionable.

Please Coloradans, this is very serious and affects all of us. Be conscientious about water usage – we have a long, hot summer ahead of us.

Aurora should keep its fireworks ban
Colorado has a fireworks ban. Which means anything that leaves the ground or explodes is illegal. So, why does Aurora lift the fireworks ban when it’s against the law to have fireworks? Especially during a drought.
