BROOMFIELD — Newton’s First Law of Motion says an object in motion stays in motion. Fittingly, it was Broomfield wide receiver Sean Newton who kept the Eagles’ early-season momentum going Thursday night.

Quarterback Slater Saunders and Newton connected three times for scores in the opening half, and Broomfield’s defense stifled Erie in its 29-7 win at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium in Week 3.

The win snaps the Eagles’ three-game losing streak against the Tigers and moves them to 3-0 this season under first-year head coach Chris Helbig. The loss sends Erie to its first 0-3 start since 2004.

What’s next for Broomfield: Begins play in the Class 4A Big 8 League, starting with Denver East on Sept. 18.

How the Eagles got here: Broomfield started the Helbig era with a 62-43 win at the coach’s alma mater, Holy Family. Since Week 1, however, it’s been the Eagles’ defense that has impressed in wins over Monarch and Erie.

After allowing Erie’s only TD of the game midway through the first quarter Thursday, the Eagles made things difficult for Tigers quarterback Jack Arnold and his offense. It came a week after they held Monarch’s explosive playmakers in check in a 24-18 win.

“We’re just playing fast and physical right now,” Helbig said. “The big thing that we preached to them after that first week was ‘Do what you’re taught throughout the week. Coaches are going to get you aligned correctly. You guys are extremely skilled. We just got to be in the right spot.’”

Week 3’s biggest breakout was undoubtedly Newton, though.

The senior had three TD receptions all last season and hadn’t scored his first of the 2026 campaign until his first touchdown against Erie tied the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter.

Saunders and Newton connected for their second touchdown of the night a few minutes later, when Saunders scrambled to his right on fourth-and-8 and threaded a pass into the back of the end zone. Later, on third-and-13, Newton got his feet down in the corner of the end zone, hauling in Saunders’ pass over his shoulder with one hand for a 19-yard score.

“My coaches have told me since the start of the season that my time is coming,” Newton said. “They said, ‘Go put the state on notice.’ And I felt tonight was the perfect night to do it.”

What’s next for Erie: Begins play in the 5A Front Range League with Fort Collins on Sept. 18.

How the Tigers got here: The Tigers started each of the previous two seasons 1-2 before ultimately putting things together, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2024 and the second round a year ago. So an 0-3 start shouldn’t be seen as too big to come back from.

But the offense needs to find its groove, and soon.

The Tigers have averaged just over 10 points per game through three weeks, a far cry from both 2024, when they averaged 36 points per game, and 2025, when they were at 32 ppg.

Against Broomfield, Arnold started well, polishing off an early drive with a TD pass to Jack Swanigan. But it all dried up after that as the Tigers were held without points for the final 42:55 of regulation.

“When you get knocked down, all you can do is get back up and keep fighting,” Erie coach Jeff Giger said. “These guys practice hard. These guys are a really close team. I’m disappointed for them because we’re just not quite making the plays when they present themselves.”

Erie had two players taken away by ambulance in the fourth quarter. Both players wore neck braces, but Giger did not have an update on either player’s condition immediately after the game.

Quote of the night: “That was amazing,” Saunders said of Newton’s breakout performance. “We were just playing football. Just playing catch and believing in one another. And this guy’s just a (freaking) dude.”
