The Waymo cars are at it again.
A driverless Waymo vehicle tried to drive down a street closed for resurfacing in Denver’s West Colfax neighborhood near Sloan’s Lake on Thursday, city transportation officials confirmed.
A photo of the light blue vehicle facing down bright orange cones and three construction workers sparked numerous reactions on social media, just days after another Waymo drove through the South Pearl Street farmers market as vendors were setting up in Denver on Sunday morning.
The Waymo did not significantly affect the resurfacing project near Perry Street and Conejos Place and did not cause any damage, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Nancy Kuhn said.
“We’re going to work with Waymo to better understand all the ways the vehicles receive information and if there’s anything we can do to assist moving forward,” Kuhn said in an email.
Colorado doesn’t have a way to ticket Waymo cars for breaking traffic laws because the vehicles don’t have a driver, though other states do.
If a Waymo vehicle did damage city property, city officials could seek payment from the company for damages or even file a civil lawsuit if Waymo did not pay, Kuhn said.
