What are your top three priorities, if elected?
1. Establish a path for fiscal stability for RTD while minimizing reductions in transit service and loss of jobs at RTD.
2. Improve service to DIA from my district.
3. Support transit opportunities to create a vibrant metropolitan area along the Front Range, such as the Colorado Connector Passenger Rail.
RTD is facing significant budget shortfalls, with varying calls for cuts to fixed-route service, fare increases and a ballot measure asking voters for a sales tax increase. What ideas do you support, and why?
Financial stability must be achieved for RTD to continue providing essential transit services for our current and future needs. To attain sustainable financial solvency, we need to pursue additional ongoing sources of revenue, such as modest fare increases, additional sales taxes, and perhaps even new revenue sources to fund transit in the 21st century. The current transit service network also needs to be re-designed to meet the challenges of population growth in communities and needs and wants of post-pandemic riders. I am supportive of reasonable reductions in service that result in savings and efficiencies, yet meet transit needs.
What concerns do you hear from RTD riders, and what would you do to address them?
The most common concerns I have heard from riders in my area relate to personal safety on some lines and routes, a desire to be able to travel to DIA more quickly than now, and frustration with being “stranded” by RTD due to inadequate service back home following attendance at sporting events and concerts. I have also spoken with several mothers of adult children with disabilities who use Access-a-Ride who have complained of “no-shows”. RTD has a process for Board Directors to collaborate with its staff on projects and problem-solving. I address these concerns in that manner.
