Zeke Ward, chairman of the Willow Creek Reclamation Committee, sits at the Nelson Tunnel and Commodore Mine Superfund site in Creede. Classified a Superfund site in 2008, the Nelson Tunnel drains toxic waste into the Rio Grande River at 270 gallons a minute. Creede residents, frustrated with the slow pace of cleanup by the EPA, have been searching for alternatives to stop the leaking mine.
