Colorado Department of Natural Resources director Mike King is moving to Denver Water starting at the end of January to oversee planning.
Gov. John Hickenlooper on Thursday announced the shift. King’s “ability to balance industry and conservation concerns is unparalleled,” Hickenlooper said in a statement praising King. “Colorado is a better place because of Mike’s service.”
King has run the natural resources department since 2010, overseeing a , creation of the and the launch of an expansion plan for trails and recreation. King also guided lengthy negotiations with the U.S. Forest Service over rules for in the state.
, King will oversee long-range planning for treated and raw water supply systems as well as demand and supply management, water rights issues and compliance with environmental laws. This is expected to include preparations for climate change.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to work on critical endeavors for the state, and will continue to be a steward of our natural resources at Denver Water,” King said.
