The Friends of Blair Caldwell African American Research Library Foundation hosts the 2011 Denver Juneteenth Celebration: We Define Who We Are, on Saturday, June 18, 2011 in the Five Points District of Denver. The annual parade begins at Manual High School, the traditional starting point for Juneteenth. The parade winds through the streets of East Denver to Welton Street where the festival kicks off. In addition to live entertainment, the event includes a variety of vendors of cultural food and wares along with a variety of pavilions including those dedicated to health, education, and the new KidZone. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday honors June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Galveston, Texas finally learned President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier.
