One week, Odawaay had promised Abdi a pair of basketball shoes, but his paycheck was shorted by Yellow Cab for vague fees. He was so embarrassed that he drove home but stayed outside in his cab until his son fell asleep so he didn't have to tell him that he couldn't buy the shoes. Odawaay later changed jobs and bought the shoes. Odawaay and 17 other taxi drivers took legal action against Yellow Cab in 2010 over alleged racist treatment by their managers — first attempting a federal lawsuit, then pursuing arbitration. On Feb. 21, a private arbitrator awarded the drivers an average of $12,000 each for being subjected to a hostile work environment. Odawaay received $15,000.
