Joe Amon
Joe Amon grew up in Little Washington, Pa., and in 1976, at the age of 17, he joined the Marine Corps. After serving six years, Amon returned to Pennsylvania to work in his hometown steel mill. When the mill closed two years later, leaving Joe unemployed, he saw an ad on television for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, which claimed, "We will teach you to be a photographer."
He received his associate's degree in 1989 and took his first job as a photojournalist with the Valley Independent in Monessen, Pa. Since then he has worked at The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and, in 2008, became a staff photojournalist at The Denver Post.
In 2007, Joe was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Photography for his project, “Aids Orphans,” which chronicled the life and ultimately the death of Victoria Lynn Ward, an eighteen-year-old survivor, inspiration and outcast who died of complications from AIDS. As a member of The Post staff, Joe shares the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting for coverage of the Aurora theater shooting. He was a member of The Post photography staff named as a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news photography, also for coverage of the Aurora theater shooting. In 2015, he was named a Pulitzer finalist in explanatory reporting for coverage of the use of CBD oil in Colorado to treat children with Dravet Syndrome, a severe seizure disorder.
