James L. Cunningham OBITUARY
James Lee Cunningham gently passed on May 19, 2026. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Love McCaskill (Matthew), son Christopher H.
Cunningham (Laura Bowers), four extraordinary grandchildren (Crawford, Edward, Macy and Leo Cunningham) and wife Priscilla Life, all who miss him terribly.
Jim lived life to the fullest as a brilliant Attorney with Sherman & Howard LLC, a musician, and a great ham on the stage.
For over 20 years he was included in every edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and listed in Who’s Who In International Real Estate Law. Jim loved the challenges of his work and especially enjoyed his memberships in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (President 1992-1993), and the Anglo-American Real Property Institute (Chairman 1999), receiving its highest honor in 2015, the Fred Lane Award. He taught on the faculty of ALI/ABA Resort Real Estate Development for many years.
A longtime member of the University Club of Denver, he served as President, Chair and frequent Music Director of the annual Twelfth Night Shows. A prolific songwriter and performer, with many of his satirical Twelfth Night songs still performed. He was a recipient of two of the club’s highest honors: Supreme Order of the Gilded Clam, and the coveted Fish Award.
The years of his retirement were full as well with golf, travel and a wife who loved to move to beautiful places: Keystone (which he was instrumental in the development of), Hawaii, Montana, North Carolina and finally Santa Fe, New Mexico. We will miss his great mind and his sense of humor.
A celebration of his joyful life is being planned.

Jim was one of a kind–a great lawyer and a longtime friend. His satirical reviews at ACREL and AARPI meetings were the best. Debby and I will miss him very much.
