James Zimmerman OBITUARY
The Honorable James D. Zimmerman, of Golden, Colorado, passed away on June 6, 2026, at age 82.
Born to Paul and Winnifred Zimmerman, he graduated from Cherry Creek High School, the University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Denver Law School. He remained a devoted supporter of both universities throughout his life.
Jim married Judy Phillips in 1974. Together they built a loving home in Golden, raising their daughter, Rebecca Zimmerman (Eric Shumake), and son, Andrew Zimmerman (Emily Miles), and welcoming two cherished granddaughters, Dahlia and Edith. He is also survived by his brothers Steve, Tom, and Bob Zimmerman.
Jim began his career with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office before being appointed by Governor Dick Lamm to serve as both Jefferson County Judge and later Colorado District Court Judge. Known for his integrity, scholarship, and commitment to fairness, he dedicated his career to public service.
Moved by the needs of abused and neglected children, Jim founded the Jefferson/Gilpin chapter of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in 2000 and remained an active board member and leader for many years. He also served the Applewood community through the Prospect Parks District and Foundation.
Jim loved the Colorado outdoors, completing all 58 Colorado fourteeners, and enjoyed tennis, travel, history, books, crossword puzzles, Broncos and CU Buffs football, DU hockey, and time with family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, June 25, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at The Vista at Applewood Golf Course in Golden. All who knew Jim are welcome. Donations in his honor may be made to CASA Jeffco/Gilpin.
