Mary Ellen Doherty Peterson OBITUARY
Mary Ellen Peterson (née Doherty) was born in Buffalo, New York, on July 7, 1945. She attended St. Mark’s School and St. Mary’s Seminary, then worked as a surgical assistant at Sisters of Charity Hospital before joining United Airlines as a flight attendant, a career that took her to Newark, Denver, and Seattle.
During her 25 years on Vashon Island, Washington, Mary Ellen transformed four homes into works of art and volunteered extensively with disadvantaged children. It was there she met John, the love of her life; they married in January 1991 and shared a devoted marriage until her passing.
In 2013 the couple moved to Pauma Valley Country Club, California, where she volunteered with the Assistance League and Pauma Valley Elementary School. In 2018, she relocated to Denver, continuing her volunteer work and earning a reputation as the ultimate hostess, always opening her home to family and friends.
Mary Ellen cherished her large family and never lost her love for Buffalo. She brought warmth, kindness, and generosity everywhere she went.
She is survived by her husband and partner in sobriety, John; sisters Susan, Patricia, and Katie; and brother Tim. Her vibrant spirit will live on in all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
