Velma Jacobs OBITUARY

Velma Dorine (Miller) Jacobs, 93, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, in Holyoke. Born on a Thanksgiving Day Nov. 24th 1932 to Orin John Miller and Lottie Pearl (Marshall) Miller on a farm outside Oakley, Kan. Velma later moved with her family, including youngest brother, Don, to a farm eight miles north of Burlington. She attended the local country school and graduated from Burlington High School in 1950. Velma was very active in high school activities as a varsity cheerleader and Song Leader. As a young woman, Velma worked at the bank, where she made excuses to visit the lobby when a certain handsome man recently discharged from the Army stopped by. After the couple met at a dance in Stratton, Velma married that handsome man, Richard A. Jacobs, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Stratton on April 24, 1954 Richard’s assignments with the highway patrol took the growing family to Trinidad and Hugo before work with the Colorado Division of Employment and Training brought the family to Aurora in 1966.

Once their youngest child entered kindergarten, Velma began a career with Aurora Public Schools, serving in the cafeteria, briefly as a classroom aide, and ultimately as secretary to the principal at Elkhart and Clyde Miller Elementary Schools. The family home on Fraser Street saw all five children graduate from Hinkley High School and served as a cherished gathering place for grandchildren. In her later years, Velma received dedicated care from her youngest son, Scott, and spouse, in Aurora and Holyoke, and enjoyed regular family visits. Velma cared for her children and grandchildren with quiet and sturdy affection, and her memory will forever bind her family together.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Richard; son Jim; brothers Wilbur, Delbert, Bill, and Don; sister Beth Winfrey; and beloved niece Patti Ann (Miller) Hopper.

She is survived by her son Richard Jacobs Jr. (Leslie) of Lander, Wyo.; son Michael Jacobs (Michelle) of Loveland; daughter Catherine Engle (Jim) of Russellville, Ind.; son Scott Jacobs (Karrie) of Holyoke; Godson Mark Miller (Lora) of Rexford, Kan.; nephew Larry Miller of Colby, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Internent has taken place, 30 July, FT Logan Nat. Cemetery.
