South Metro Fire Rescue posted on social media at about 5:45 a.m. that the highway was closed at Founders Parkway because they were putting out a fire in a commercial vehicle just south of Happy Canyon Road.

At 6:20 a.m., they posted that the fire was out and firefighters were working to stabilize the vehicle’s trailer on the side of the highway so that they could safely reopen lanes. By 7:30 a.m., one was open northbound, though they still advised drivers to consider alternate routes because of likely delays.

Public information officer Brian Willie said no one was injured. Firefighters aren’t sure what the vehicle was carrying or why it ignited, he said.

South Metro Fire Rescue divers, West Metro Fire divers and state wildlife officers all searched the reservoir for the missing rafter and recovered the man’s body shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, state wildlife officials said.

The drowned rafter will be publicly identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

Wildlife officers found an adult with life-threatening injuries on board the boat, according to the release. The officers took the victim to the dock, where paramedics with South Metro Fire Rescue then took the boater to the hospital, state wildlife officials said.

Information about the boater’s injuries and what led up to the accident was not immediately available on Sunday.

Crews from Sable Altura Fire Rescue, South Metro Fire Rescue and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to private property near the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds at 6 a.m. after two teenagers called 911 about a woman trapped in the silo, sheriff’s office spokesperson Ginger Delgado said.

Paramedics took the woman to the hospital, but additional information about her injuries was not immediately available. She was considered “nonemergent,” South Metro spokesperson Matthew Assell said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the case as a trespassing and has not determined whether the three teenagers will face a citation or court summons, Delgado said.

The abandoned silo is one of several in Colorado and poses a serious danger, Sable Altura Fire Chief Rich Solomon said. , decommissioned by the federal government after the Cold War, are hundreds of feet deep, completely dark and can contain unknown gases and other hazards.

“They are incredibly dangerous,” Solomon said. “It’s an unsafe environment and they need to be sealed up forever.”

Another teen who fell into the silo in 2024 was seriously injured, and Solomon said their life was “forever altered.”

“Death is 100% on the table” for people who try to enter the silos, Solomon said.

Two children were sitting on a float near the reservoir’s swim beach in Cherry Creek State Park at about 4 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Neither child was wearing a life jacket.

One child left the float while in shallow water and walked back to shore, but the other continued floating deeper into the reservoir, agency officials said in the release. Witnesses saw the second child go underwater shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

A seasonal park ranger with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other state park visitors jumped into the reservoir to attempt a rescue, according to the release. South Metro Fire Rescue’s dive team was conducting water rescue training in another part of the park, and divers were searching near the swim beach within minutes, according to state wildlife officials.

The child’s drowned body was recovered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, according to the agency. Officials have not identified the child who died.

The West Metro Fire dive team and Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the search and rescue operation, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
