The Nuggets travel to Houston on Saturday, then face the holder of the NBA’s best record – Phoenix (59-19) – on Monday. The final game of the regular season is Tuesday at the fan-friendly Pepsi Center, where they will play the mediocre Portland Trail Blazers.
The Nuggets could mathematically end up atop the Northwest Division standings should Seattle lose the rest of the way and Denver wins the rest of its games. But let’s just be happy we are in the playoffs. As The Post’s Adam Thompson wrote after the Nuggets beat the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night, “It wasn’t that long ago that a 14-point Nuggets win was never considered a letdown.”
Around town
Your Rockies are in town, and they take on the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series, starting off tonight with “Dollar Hot Dog Night”! Unfortunately, the limit is one dog per customer. On the bright side, a least it’s not “Bring Your Own Mustard Night.”
Jamey Wright, who takes on some lefty named Noah Lowry, needs 15 home starts to break Pedro Astacio’s Coors Field record of 67 starts. Wright is 0-0 with a 1.23 ERA. He held the Giants to one run in 7 1/3 innings Saturday, but Michael Tucker’s grand slam off cost the Rockies the game.
The Giants swept the Rockies last weekend at SBC Park. says they played “pretty dadgum good” in two of those games. For other “pretty dadgum good” baseball, perhaps some college ball is in order: Metro State takes on Regis at Auraria Field for a four-game series: today at 3 p.m., a doubleheader Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
What We’d Like to See
1. A History Channel show on George Karl’s scar.
2. A Discovery Channel show on George Karl’s hip surgery.
3. An ESPN show on George Karl, coach of the year.
The couch
On: What else – NASCAR. The Samsung/Radio Shack 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Sunday, 10:30 a.m. Elliott Sadler won last year at Texas Motor Speedway; Jimmie Johnson leads Nextel Cup race with 977 points.
Off: On Saturday and Sunday, as part of “Doors Open Denver,” six buildings at the University of Denver will be open to the public, so hop on over to campus, take the tour and pick up a Pioneers 2005 NCAA hockey championship shirt while you are at it. You’ll look almost as cool as the folks wearing 2004 championship shirts. Tour includes the Pioneers’ home, the fabulous Magness Arena. Go to: www.denvergov.org/doorsopendenver/
