David Adelman trusts a steady handle.

So when it mattered most last season, he trusted Tyus Jones.

The Nuggets are re-signing the veteran point guard to a new one-year deal in NBA free agency, a league source told The Denver Post on Wednesday afternoon.

They first acquired Jones off the buyout market in March. He played in only 11 regular season games for Denver, but when the team was facing elimination in the first round of the playoffs, Adelman turned to Jones for rotation minutes in Games 5 and 6 against Minnesota.

Jones, whose claim to fame is his record assist-to-turnover ratio, was able to get the ball up the floor against pressure and set up Denver’s offense in those games.

This will be his 12th season in the NBA. The Nuggets declined Jalen Pickett’s fourth-year team option earlier this week in a move that signaled where their trust resides on the point guard depth chart. Adelman and Denver’s lead executives have emphasized the importance of adding ball-handlers to the roster this summer.
