It might be, it could be, it is! The Page 2 notes. …
Don’t know about you, but if the Broncos just had selected a couple more cornerbacks, I could have gotten excited about their draft.
OK, so I’m kidding. The Bronx picked corners with their first three picks: one in the second and two in the third round. And for all we know, they would have picked more in the fourth and fifth, too, if they hadn’t traded those picks.
So what gives? Why did they go for so many corners after drafting two last year (Jeremy LeSueur and ) and keeping an undrafted free agent () on their roster?
Two reasons. First, the Broncos’ front office isn’t convinced that LeSueur, Shoate and Alexander will be long-term fixtures on the roster. Then there’s the issue. Or should I say the Drew Rosenhaus issue?
The Broncos fully expect Walls to recover from the shoulder problems that ruined his 2004 season. Question is, if he bounces back with a great season, will they pay him?
Walls hits unrestricted free agency next winter. If he’s coming off a career year, his agent, Rosenhaus, will be looking for big money. Sound like a familiar story line? Two other Rosenhaus clients, Clinton Portis and , also wanted big raises from the Broncos, and each got a one-way ticket out of town.
Further clouding the issue is this: The Broncos already are paying nuclear money. Even if they want to keep Walls, a great kid and a considerable talent, can they justify it? As they say on TV, stay tuned, folks. …
Interesting anecdote from Dick Vitale, courtesy of ESPN radio: Vitale was having breakfast in a restaurant the other day when Bears quarterback Craig Krenzel stopped by to say hello. Over the course of the conversation, Krenzel, an Ohio State alum, told Vitale that the doomsayers are all wrong about Maurice Clarett. …
Not that Krenzel has a few clues, but he was a molecular genetics major at Ohio State. …
I’ve heard of the Heisman Jinx, but this is ridiculous: Colorado School of Mines’ own Chad Friehauf, among other college QBs, signs a free-agent deal and Oklahoma’s Jason White can’t find a team willing to give him so much as a look-see. …
By the numbers: Six, maybe seven. That’s the number of new defensive starters the Chiefs figure to have this season compared with the start of last season. …
Ten years into the history of Coors Field, the question remains the same: Can the Rockies ever win Up Here? Perhaps the answer lies in a number. As in, Mike Hampton’s 1.17 ERA with the Braves through Tuesday. With the Rox, it was almost 1.17 an inning. …
And now for today’s reality check: Tuesday’s attendance to celebrate Coors Field’s 10th birthday was announced at 18,855. Uh-huh. Eyes, maybe. …
Brother, can you spare a pitch to hit: A-Rod, 10 ribbies on Tuesday. , eight ribbies through 19 games. …
The best thing about April? What, you mean other than box scores in the paper every day? …
And finally, the Broncos on Tuesday agreed to terms with 6-foot-8, 337-pound tackle Anthony Clement. So much for our view of Mount Evans.
