Attitude about Altitude. My April 30 column about the up-
and-down nature of programming on Altitude Sports & Entertainment caught the eye of several readers.
“I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would hire (Joe Williams), much less why he has managed to stay on ‘The Fan’ for so long,” wrote Ernest Pierce. “He is the most negative person on the air … I think it’s really him; he is always that way.”
Dave Haxel dreams that AS&E will fill some of its ample airtime with games from the World hockey championships, taking place in Europe. “It’s probably too late to do something.” Yes, Dave, it is. An Altitude spokesman says they have no plans to carry any of the games, not even those involving the U.S. team.
Phillip Eagle offered a plug for AS&E’s “Boardroom Sports,” “a fascinating sports show,” which, unfortunately, the station no longer carries.
The wet weather must be keeping people indoors because others wrote, too.
“I appreciated your bit on Mike Rosen, as I am a devoted listener of his,” said Rosen fan Kevin “Don’t Call Me Archie” Bunker. “You seem surprised by some of his statements about judicial nominees and him not lining up with the Focus on the Family gang against (Sen. Ken) Salazar. If you gave Rosen more time I think you’d be pleasantly surprised by his stand on several issues.” Sorry, Kevin, Rosen and I agree on only one thing – baseball is a great game.
And out of nowhere came one-time KHOW radio icon (with Hal Moore, his partner) Charley Martin, retired and sunning himself with repeated rounds of golf in Arizona: “Thank you for remembering me and how to spell my name. I love Arizona. We still have many friends in Denver who keep us up to date on things.”
Blowin’ in the wind
Nothing sells TV news like the weather, especially when there’s a danger of the dread “splashback” on your morning commute. Four of the town’s TV news shows led with weather coverage Sunday night. KUSA-Channel 9 went with a touching story of a hit-and-run victim in Aurora.
In weather-related news: KDVR-Channel 31 forecaster Chris Dunn first in Colorado to be designated a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, a new, harder-to-earn classification from the board that does such things.
Around the dial
Peter Boyles hosts a tribute to Chicano activist Corky Gonzales, who died April 12, on “Colorado Inside Out” (7 p.m. Wednesday, KBDI-Channel 12). … Angie “The Human Car Alarm” Green, who lives in Westminster, gets her 15 minutes on “The Late Show With David Letterman” (10:35 p.m. Friday, KCNC-Channel 4). … Quotable: “The people are a many-
headed beast.” – Horace
