One of the most popular topics for reader questions is Mount Evans. Here are a couple of their queries.
Q: At certain seasons, a distinct vertical line can be seen on the east face of Mount Evans. What is it?
A: There are two possibilities. A ridge runs up the mountain and may seem vertical when viewed from the Denver area; or it could be Colo rado 5, which runs parallel to that ridge and is the highest paved highway in North America. Q: How far and how high is the climb to the near-summit of Mount Evans from where you park in the summer?
A: The elevation of the parking lot is 14,130 feet; the climb is 134 feet on a half-mile trail.
Q: The most frequently asked question: Is the road to Mount Evans closed?
A: Colorado 5 is closed every winter. However, Colorado 103 off I-70 is open year-round and goes to Echo Lake, where Colorado 5 starts. People can hike or snowshoe in from that point.
