Americana musician Brandi Carlile just wrapped a three-night stint at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and fans who attended the Saturday show got a special surprise when she was joined by ‘90s rock legend Alanis Morissette.
For about a year, Carlile has added a cover of Morissette’s “Uninvited” to her set rotation and it became a crowd favorite after this summer’s Newport Folk Festival — so much so, that she recently released at the behest of her followers.
But in an apparent attempt to one-up herself and delight fans who traveled to Colorado, Carlile brought Morissette out on stage for a rocking duet of the song, which was originally released in 1998 as part of the “City of Angels” soundtrack.

Carlile headlined at Red Rocks Sept. 11 to 13, but not every show was the same. On Sunday, she informed the audience early in the concert that Morissette would not, in fact, be there for a second night. But she still played “Uninvited” in her encore and had Colorado crooner Nathaniel Rateliff join her for a cover of a classic sung by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.
Carlile recently told Vanity Fair that “Uninvited” elicited after the Newport Folk Festival and that’s why she ultimately decided to release the live recording.
“I was just totally in it, immersed in the song, unaware of the fact that I was onstage at Newport, unaware of any camera, and it was just a really honest release of something that I was feeling,” Carlile said. “I enjoy singing this song so much. Itap such an important song for me to sing every night. I want to keep doing it, and people enjoy it. So, like, yeah — give people what they want.”
Morissette has been spotted making other surprise appearances this summer. In August, at the singer’s original Daisy Chains Fields festival for a rendition of “Ironic.”
