Purported construction at the Colorado Convention Center had dozens of South High School parents concerned that their children would miss out on their high school graduation.

But it turned out to be a prank.

About 25 families received official- looking letters Tuesday notifying them that their children were among 50 who would not be allowed to walk with their class.

“I was in shock. After everything I’ve done for that school, it made the night kind of depressing,” said South senior Nick Herrera, one of the recipients.

In microscopic print at the bottom of the letter was the message, “This letter brought to you courtesy of the senior class of 2005, you’ve been pranked.”

Denver Public Schools spokesman Mark Stevens said a single student was behind the letters.

“As far as construction, the business was finished in December and there are absolutely no construction issues,” said Greg Lowry, director of sales for the Convention Center.

He said 11 DPS graduations are scheduled there in the coming weeks.
