Western State’s Brad Koschel and Lisa Holeman led the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, after the first day of competition Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference outdoor track & field championships.

The event is being hosted by Adams State College at Rex Stadium in Alamosa.

Koschel, the defending decathlon champion, was one of the top three finishers in each of the five contested events and was the fastest man in the day-ending 400 meters, clocking a time of 49.89 seconds to score 820 points.

Holeman won both running events and was a strong second in the high jump. She has 2,901 points through four events and holds a 90-point lead on RMAC indoor pentathlon champion and heptathlon performance list leader Cali Cordes of Nebraska-Kearney. Holeman, a junior, is a graduate of Broomfield High School.

UNC splits in baseball

John Ray hit a three-run homer in Northern Colorado’s final at-bat in the first game of a doubleheader to give the Bears an 8-5 come-from-behind victory over visiting Southern Utah.

The Thunderbirds won the first game 10-6.

Sky Sox fall

Jon Knott’s solo homer in the eighth inning lifted the Portland Beavers to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
