The National Weather Service warned today of the possibility of flooding over the next few days on Colorado’s Western Slope because of warm weather in the nearby snow-blanketed mountains.

A “flood watch” was issued this morning for portions of Delta, Mesa and Montrose counties.

“Very warm temperatures forecast for the next several days will result in significant snowmelt across the grand mesa and surrounding mountains,” a Weather Service advisory said.

“All area rivers and streams in the watch area will likely rise throughout the upcoming weekend,” the advisory added. “However, waterways with particular flood concerns include Plateau Creek, Surface Creek and other creeks that drain the Grand Mesa.

“Significant rises can also be expected on the Gunnison River by this weekend. Low-lying areas near the Gunnison River, especially near Delta, will likely experience some degree of flooding by this weekend.

“Rises on the Colorado river are also forecast for the next few days, although the river is not expected to reach flood stage at this time. However, minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas, especially near and downstream from Fruita.”

The Weather Service advised residents of low-lying areas near rivers and creeks in the flood-watch areas to prepare for flooding by the weekend.
