2 suspects arrested on U.S. drug charges
Two men, including one from Denver, were arrested on federal drug-trafficking charges, and 48 kilograms of suspected cocaine were seized by the U.S. Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration after the men were caught trying to bring the suspected drugs into Denver, the U.S. attorney’s office in Denver reported.
Michael Ryan Boyd, 29, of Clint, Texas, and Rodolfo Rodriguez-Mijares, 44, of Denver were taken into custody, according to a press release.
Colo. man guilty in drunk-driving death
Jurors deliberated less than three hours Thursday before finding a Colorado man guilty of being a reckless, drunken driver in a Father’s Day crash last June that killed a woman and seriously injured her husband. Ron Holland, 45, of Weld County faces up to 30 years in prison for the death of Janna Klussmann of Fort Collins and for the injuries suffered by her husband, Andrew Klussmann, a former Colorado State University coach.
Sentence under review in triple slaying
Jonathan Edward Matheny, ordered to spend 68 years in prison for the deaths of a married couple and their teenage grandson, may get a shorter sentence after the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the trial judge did not have the right to impose so long a term.
Slaying victim ID’d; suspect is at large
Police have identified a man found shot to death in an apartment at 900 S. Quince St. early Wednesday and have released the name of a suspect in the case.
Charles Anthony Wynn, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect has been identified as Deonta Roberts, 23, also know as “Spliff” or “Splef.”
2 bodies recovered at plane-crash site
A Ouray County search-and- rescue team recovered two bodies Thursday from the site of a May 11 plane crash high on Whitehouse Mountain, said a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. The bodies of the pilot, Robert R. Ford, 59, of Chino, Calif., and his wife, Patricia Ford, 57, were removed from a ridge between 11,000 and 13,000 feet, said Penni Berry, the spokeswoman.The Fords’ son, Richard Ford, 36, and his son, Matthew, 4, could not be located.
Jail officials discuss policy on immigrants
Denver jail officials met Thursday to review their policy for reporting suspected illegal immigrants to federal authorities.
Public Safety Manager Al LaCabe said jail officials notify federal immigration officials when an inmate has a federal warrant.
LaCabe also said he spoke to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and that the agency did not want Denver to change its policy. The agency has asked the jail to make available records of inmates suspected of being foreign-born.
Teachers union OKs update to contract
The Jefferson County Education Association teachers union has approved its annual update to the four-year contract with the Jefferson County Board of Education.
The contract expires Aug. 31, 2007, and includes a 2.5 percent cost-of-living raise for teachers.
