Tyler Goulding of Air Force and Charlie Soule of the University of Denver are tied for 19th Thursday after the first round of the NCAA men’s West Regional at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calf.

Goulding and Soule shot 1-over-par 71s, leaving them eight shots behind first-round leader Oscar Alvarez of Brigham Young, who has a three-shot lead. DU’s James Love is a shot behind Goulding and Soule, in a tie for 34th. Colorado State was led by Kevin McAlpine and John Hayes, who are tied for 70th at 74.

BYU has a one-shot lead in the team standings over Pepperdine with a 2-under 278. Denver is tied for 15th at 294. CSU is tied for 24th at 303.

Play was suspended with the first round incomplete at the men’s Central Regional at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., after rain and lightning in the morning caused a three-hour delay.

Colorado sophomore Edward McGlasson was tied for 28th at 2-over through 12 holes. The leader, Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State, was 4-under with one hole to play.

Duke leading way at women’s championship

Anna Grzebien shot a tournament-best 6-under 65 to help top-ranked Duke take an eight-stroke lead over Auburn after three rounds of the NCAA Division I women’s championship in Sunriver, Ore.

Duke, nine strokes behind Auburn and Pepperdine after the second round, had a 6-under 278 total – counting the top four scores from the five-player team – to finish at 21-over 873 on the Sunriver Resort’s Meadows course. The Blue Devils, the 1999 and 2002 champions, won the NCAA Fall Preview in September at Sunriver.

“It isn’t over, we still have to play tomorrow,” Duke coach Dan Brooks said. “After this round, we’ve got to release it and come back tomorrow and play.”

Grzebien, a sophomore from Narragansett, R.I., who won the NCAA East Regional two weeks ago for her first college title, offset an opening bogey with seven birdies to top the individual standings at even-par 213.

Olive bids for fifth title

John Olive is two matches from winning his fifth Colorado Golf Association Senior Match Play championship after winning two matches Thursday at Meridian Golf Club in Englewood.

Olive will face the top remaining seed, No. 2 Charlie Post, who also won in the morning’s round of 16 and the afternoon quarterfinals.

The other semifinal pits 1996 champion Grant Maples Jr. against 2003 CGA Senior Stroke Play champion Kelly Crone.
