A man who police say fled the scene of Tuesday’s gun battle between an Aurora officer and occupants of a stolen car has been arrested.
Authorities today also identified the suspect who was shot and killed by the officer as Michael R. Simmons.
The shooting occurred Tuesday night after the officer spotted a reported stolen car and followed it to the 1100 block of Kenyon Street, where the car stopped.
Police say the officer then was fired upon from the car. The officer reportedly returned fire, fatally wounding Simmons.
The stolen car then fled into Denver, pursued by the Aurora officer. At Verbana Street, two suspects fled the car. One, a 17-year-old, was quickly captured.
The other, Rayshaun J. Holmes, 24, remained at large. A warrant had been issued for his arrest on a charge of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, authorities said.
Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Rudy Herrera said Holmes called Denver police early today, saying he knew he was wanted by police and that he wished to turn himself in.
He said he would wait for officers at an address in the 900 block of S. Quince St.
Denver police went to the address at about 2:50 a.m. today and arrested Holmes without incident, Herrera said. He was turned over to Aurora officers, who took him to the Aurora Municipal Justice Center.
Holmes was to be taken to the Arapahoe County Jail this afternoon, Herrera said.
Police described Simmons, the suspect who was mortally wounded in the shootout, as a 32-year-old man with an extensive criminal history in various states. They said he also went by the name Cohen.
The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified.
