A bicyclist was struck by a pickup truck that was passing another vehicle and killed Thursday night near Evergreen, the State Patrol said today.

The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Thursday on Jefferson County Road 103, 1 1/2 miles west of Colorado 74, State Patrol spokesman Ron Watkins said.

The unidentified cyclist was struck by a 1995 Chevy pickup truck driven by Frederick Ahlquist, 25, of Evergreen, Watkins said in a statement.

“State Patrol investigators determined that Ahlquist was traveling southbound on Jefferson County Road 103 in the act of passing another vehicle on the left at an estimated speed of 55 mph when he crashed head-on into the bicyclist who was traveling north on highway 103,” Watkins’ statement said.

“The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and no positive identification has been made at this time.” he said. Ahlquist was reported to be uninjured.

Watkins said Ahlquist could face a charge of careless driving causing death, a misdemeanor traffic offense.

Troopers had not immediately determined whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The county road was closed during a four-hour investigation of the fatal accident.
