Weld County – A 40-year-old pedestrian was killed late Thursday after being struck by a vehicle carrying volunteer firefighters who were responding to an emergency, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday when volunteer firefighters from the Weld County town of Galeton struck a pedestrian on County Road 51, near Colorado 392, about 15 miles northeast of Greeley.

The victim is identified only as a 40-year-old Galeton man. He was pronounced dead at a Greeley hospital.

The State Patrol said the Chevy pickup truck that the firefighters were riding at the time of the accident was equipped with emergency lights, but it was not immediately known whether those lights were in operation.

The nature of the emergency to which the firefighters were responding was not reported.
