Luis Romero helped coach his daughter’s fast-pitch softball team to a championship on Sunday. But only hours after the joyous celebration, his family was reminded yet again of the ongoing tragedy in their lives.

He pleaded at a news conference Sunday afternoon for help in finding the person who shot and killed Luis Romero Jr. two weeks ago.

Knowing who shot him will “give my family some closure,” Luis Romero Sr. said, with Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman, District Attorney Mitch Morrissey and City Council member Judy Montero at his side. “I can’t sleep because I don’t know who did this.”

Luis Romero Jr., 21, was shot during the early hours of May 8 in the parking lot of Subway Pizza Tavern, 3795 Lipan St. A fight had broken out, and Romero had tried to break it up. He and 26-year-old Christopher Ramos were shot. Ramos is recovering.

A memorial outside Subway Pizza Tavern is decorated with silk flowers, candles, posters and pictures of Romero. Candles that have long since burned out sit at its base.

Police are asking for more witnesses to come forward. They are also looking for a white or gray 1990 four-door Lexus with Colorado license plate 925- FNO. The car may have a broken window. Police think that someone may be hiding the car.

“We know more people are out there” who know something, said Morrissey. “People that have information need to come forward.”

Romero was killed on the same night as police Detective Donald “Donnie” Young. Last week, Luis Romero Sr. said he felt that his son’s case was being overshadowed by the search for the suspect in Young’s slaying, Raul Garcia-Gomez.

“The police are doing all that they can,” Emilio Romero, Luis Romero Jr.’s cousin, said Sunday. He said the family was happy and confident with the police work.

Still wearing his coaching shirt, Luis Romero Sr. looked tired Sunday afternoon.

“I just want this part closed,” he said.
