Glenwood Springs – Prosecutors dropped a sexual assault case against a former Silt man in part because witnesses had a meeting to “get their stories straight,” according to the defense attorney.

Assistant District Attorney Vince Felletter declined to comment on the case against Alfred Owens, 53.

Owens’ attorney, Greg Greer, read a statement in a Glenwood Springs district courtroom Wednesday citing questionable witnesses, media reports and lack of adequate review by authorities.

“No experienced (district attorney) ever realistically assessed the case,” he said. “An experienced prosecutor indicated when the trial was reset that she did not want to handle the case and would have dismissed it.”

Greer said witnesses accused Owens of at least 10 sexual assaults on children, and at least one witness “admitted that all of the witnesses had a meeting to get their stories straight.”

His statement also said some witnesses had committed crimes including supplying liquor to minors and lying to police, undermining their credibility.
