Northglenn – An off-duty Adams County sheriff’s deputy was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Northglenn police say Deputy Jon Holiday was on his way home when he was hit Monday at about 7:30 p.m. by a vehicle that drove into oncoming traffic at the intersection of 104th and Livingston. He was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified has been identified as Melvyn Saunders. Police say Saunders has two prior DUI convictions. He is suspected of driving drunk at the time of the accident.

Saunders remained at the scene of the crash following the accident. He is being held at the Arapahoe County Jail.

Holiday was 39 years old, and had been with the department since 2001. He was described in a statement by Northglenn Police as an honest man, with integrity, who was well respected and always willing to help his fellow deputies. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr said, in a statement, “This is a sad day for Adams County and the Sheriff’s Office. We have lost a father, son, and a friend. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife and children, other family members, and to the employees of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.”
