Who: Angelika and Dennis Chappell of Pueblo

Where: Teotihuacan archaeological site

Out and about: Teotihuacan is a World Heritage Site. The ancient city was estimated to have had at least 100,000 inhabitants and, at its peak around A.D. 650, extended its trade, political and cultural influence from Yucatan to the Sonoran desert. Teotihuacan awes and humbles the modern visitor with the almost unimaginable vitality and power of the culture that created this place. Only a fraction of the great city has been uncovered. Mounds and undulating patches of ground hint at treasures still to be discovered.

Travel tip: It’s easy and cheap to travel to Teotihuacan from Mexico City. The Metro subway takes you to the northern bus terminal for Mexico City, where one catches a bus that goes to the archaeological site, returning by way of the modern town of Teotihuacan. Cost for the trip one way for both subway and bus is 27 pesos – about $2.70. The trip allows one to experience the way Mexican citizens travel and to see what tourist excursions don’t show.
