Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe has been in contact with the Cleveland Cavaliers about their vacant presidency in recent days, but had not set up an interview with them as of early Tuesday, according to a source close to the situation.
Vandeweghe, who is in Chicago with other members of Denver’s front office scouting potential draft picks, declined comment on the opening. So did Paul Andrews, senior vice president of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, which oversees the Nuggets.
Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown is widely believed to be the front-runner for the Cleveland president’s job if he chooses not to coach next season.
The Nuggets first denied Cleveland permission to talk to Vandeweghe, but later reversed course. Vandeweghe’s contract does not expire until August 2006. If the Cavs offer him a job, it remains the Nuggets’ right to deny him permission to leave.
Martin off crutches
Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin, who had surgery on his left knee last month, showed progress in a checkup this week, according to trainer Jim Gillen.
“Everything looks good,” Gillen said. “He’s off crutches and moving on. He won’t do any court work for a while because there’s no reason to.”
Martin already has started strength training.
