Three Thieves

2003 Extremadura Tempranillo, about $14/liter

(Imported by Liberators, Sausalito, Calif.)

Make room in the pantry: here’s your summer barbecue wine. Not only is it light, juicy, spicy, frisky, with just enough tannin to take down grilled sausages – all the things you want from a summer red – but it’s packaged in a generous 1-liter jug with a screw-cap for easy access (and assured freshness).

It’s the latest release from the Three Thieves (actually Joel Gott of Napa’s Gott Wines, Charles Bieler of France’s Chteau Routas, and Mendocino-based grape grower Roger Scommenga), whose goal is to find great grapes for near nothing and make them into affordable, fun and delish wines.
