Getting your player ready...

“Golf,” Mark Twain observed, “is a good walk spoiled.”

Watching other people play is my idea of nothing to do, but when the two people playing are Ray Romano (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) and Kevin James (“King of Queens”), fun ensues.

The two get the rare opportunity to play in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in a documentary, “Making the Cut” (7 p.m. Saturday, HBO), and have the time of their lives doing it.

“As an amateur golfer, it’s the greatest experience,” says James, “because, even when you hook the ball into the other fairway, you get to apologize to guys like Fred Couples.”

Other weekend highlights:

Friday

Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb talks about the successes and failures of his 12-year tenure on “The Aaron Harber Show” (9 p.m., KBDI-Channel 12).

The second episode of the six-part “Into the West” doesn’t live up to its opening night, but you can’t quit now. Matthew Settle stars as a young man making his way in the Old West (6 and 8 p.m., TNT).

Saturday

Ian McKellen is brilliant in the 1995 version of “Richard III,” Shakespeare’s tale of the hunchbacked king. The battlefield scenes are particularly gripping (8 p.m., KRMA-Channel 6).

Fear of heights shouldn’t stop you from watching one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best thrillers – “Vertigo,” made in 1958 and starring Jimmy Stewart (6 p.m., TCM).

If you missed Tuesday’s first two third-season premiere episodes of the nutty cop spoof “Reno 911” they repeat with the deputies getting out jail. Don’t ask (11 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Comedy).

Sunday

The unusual guest duo of Ray Romano and Stephen Hawking makes the 350th episode of “The Simpsons” worth a second look (7 p.m., KDVR-Channel 31).

Emilio Estevez directed the November episode of “Cold Case” called “Sleepover,” about the murder of a 12-year-old girl in 1989 (7 p.m., KCNC-Channel 4).

A Father’s Day documentary, “Xiara’s Song” tells the story of a 7-year-old girl trying to stay in touch with her father who won’t get out of prison until she turns 17 (5 p.m., Cinemax).

Around the dial

Chris Myers, one of the best sports interviewers in the biz, concludes a serious three-part talk with outspoken former NBA star Charles Barkley (10:30 p.m. Saturday, FSNRM). Among Barkley’s observations: “America doesn’t like gay people, that’s the fact of the matter.” … KHOW 630-AM’s sixth annual 5K Spirit Sprint, celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day, starts at 8 a.m. Saturday in City Park. … Quotable: “I know what makes (people) laugh but trying to get your hands on the why of it is like trying to pick an eel out of a tub of water.” – W.C. Fields.
