Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin was named the Conference USA men’s athlete of the decade in a vote by its athletic directors.
Martin was the consensus national player of the year as a senior at Cincinnati in 1999-2000, making a sweep of the Naismith, Oscar Robertson, John Wooden, Adolph Rupp (Associated Press), NABC, Basketball News and Basketball Times awards.
Martin was a three-time conference defensive player of the year and was the MVP of the conference tournament in 1998.
UNC signs Montanan
Will Cusker of Missoula, Mont., will wrestle for Northern Colorado after being recommended by a former UNC wrestling standout.
Cusker, a 133-pounder, wrestled at Missoula High School for Lanny Bryant, who recommended Cusker to Bears coach Jack Maughan.
Cusker compiled a 106-34 record and was state runner-up twice.
Braasch transfers
Former Arvada West basketball star Ashley Braasch is transferring from Western State to Colorado Christian.
Braasch, a freshman guard, started 18 games for the Mountaineers this past season, averaging nine points per game. She will have to sit out next season because of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regulations.
Jett wins PSAC award
Former Littleton High School and Northern Colorado decathlete Ron Jett was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the year after finishing third in the decathlon at the Division II national championships.
Fort Lewis signs Belgian
Dennis Hellebuyck, a native of Belgium who ran cross country and played soccer at Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School, signed a scholarship offer to run cross country at Fort Lewis.
Hellebuyck finished fifth in the New Mexico Class 5A state championships.
