Swede sensation
The Swedish media came over the pond in droves to cover Annika Sorenstam. While it was too far for most of her home country’s fans to come, she did get major support from one Swede.
Peter Forsberg.
Forsberg, who led the Avalanche to two Stanley Cups, followed Sorenstam through part of her even-par round Thursday.
“I admire her consistency,” Forsberg said during a weather delay. “She’s always up there. She never has a bad day.”
Surprisingly, the two had never met until Thursday, when Forsberg said hello during the break. Sorenstam had to scamper off while Forsberg talked with other Swedes in the tournament.
Forsberg is more than an avid fan. He’s an avid golfer with a 5-handicap and owns a golf course in Sweden. He has undergone surgery on his hand and stomach in recent years and Wednesday was his first round in a while. His score?
“It was way up there,” he said.
Forsberg was asked what was more impressive, winning the Grand Slam or two Stanley Cups.
“Oh, the Grand Slam is much more difficult,” he said. “If we had won four straight Stanley Cups, it might be different.”
